The local fresh food market "Pjaca"
The local market will show you how shopping used to be done. Dalmatians still keep a very traditional form of shopping in zadars “pjaca” market. It is a one of a kind interactive shopping experiance where you can meet and speak to the farmers who grow the food. If you are staying in Zadar's city center the market is a quick walk from your accommodation.
Your eyes will feast on the freshest organic food from the surrounding region. The best time to go shopping is an early morning between 7a.m. and 12pm. Earlier is better to avoid the summer heat and crowds. The market closes after 12:00pm because all the fresh products are usually sold.
Experiencing the traditional way of shopping will bring you back to a simpler time while you are surrounded by centuries of Roman stone architechture in Zadar's city center. The prices are fantastic when taking into account how local and fresh all the food is. We recommend walking around a tiny bit to negotiate the best prices available in the market.
The farmers who grow the food also sell the food as they have for generations. Zadar’s Adriatic geographic position offers a year-round growing season. Dec and Jan will yield lemons and mandarines which is a plesent surprise for north Americans. May and June will produce everyones favorite scrumptious strawberries. In addition to the fruits and vegetables that are plentiful everywhere in the pjaca local specialties such as olive oil, honey and spices readily available. A wide variety of cheeses – specifically from the island of Pag – are easy to purchase.
Local farmers also bring fresh meat and poultry to market on a daily basis where you can select your specific cut and size. You will notice the smell of the fish market which is part of city pjaca and is a must visit. Once your shopping is complete right around the corner you will discover Zadars city center square. This is a fantastic location to take a load off and enjoy a coffee in a sun like the locals do.
